Improved grinding pin

July 31, 2025

Problems Grinding pins are mainly used for cutting hard and ultra-hard materials such as lithium disilicate glass ceramics. The metal-bonded mounted points are often exposed to high pressures and temperatures, which can lead to chipping of the diamonds and wear due to the heat generated. These signs of wear promote clogging of the pin and thus impair the efficiency of the grinding process.

The newly developed grinding pin from HPTec offers an innovative solution to these problems. Thanks to a special additional coating, the diamond grains are prevented from breaking out, thereby avoiding premature wear and significantly increasing the service life of the grinding pin. This further development not only ensures a longer service life, but also consistently high processing quality.

Comparison In our laboratory test, we carried out a comparison between our standard XCC 010 grinding pin and our new development with additional coating under the following conditions:

  • Grinding pin cylindrical Ø 2.5 mm, diamond coating D126
  • Speed: 42000 U/min
  • Feed XY: 1500 mm/min oder 1,5m/min
  • Feed Z: 1500 mm/min oder 1,5m/min
  • Strategy: Full cut (trochoidal milling)
In laboratory tests, our new development was particularly convincing compared to the standard XCC 010 grinidng pin in two areas: the adhesion of the individual diamonds was significantly improved by the new coating, thus considerably reducing the tearing out of individual diamonds. In addition, a significant reduction in material build-up between the diamonds was recorded, which leads to greater efficiency during use.

Result Depending on the machine type and influencing factors, the service life can be doubled. In our laboratory test, our newly developed, coated gridning pin achieved around twice the service life of the current market standard.

  • Fewer diamond breakouts
  • Fewer material deposits in the gaps
  • Improved process reliability
  • Longer machine running times due to longer service life
